Service learning and social responsibility

According to Professor Dr. Bernd Helmig, the Chair of Public and Nonprofit Management at the University of Mannheim, “Today, social responsibility is an integral part of the curriculum in probably every existing business study program. It is important that students learn about responsible leadership in theory, but giving them the opportunity to apply it to real-world social projects makes a big difference. I have been concerned with the question how to help students become responsible managers for many years and I think that the personal engagement ‘Service Learning’ requires has a beneficial and long-lasting influence on the students’ professional career.”

What do you think? As a student, a professor, or even a future employer, do you think service learning is an important element to integrate in to business education?
